School board approves revisions to Parent-Student Handbook
By Barry H. Hendrix
The Thomasville City Board of Education approved June 29 revisions to the Parent-Student Handbook for the 2021-2022 school year.
The special called board meeting was held in the Thomasville High School library.
The chief change in the handbook concerned students wearing hoodies. School officials had considered banning hoodies from the dress code after problems during the last school year. “I think it was a hot button topic,” said Garth Moss, Thomasville school superintendent.
Only hoodies bought through a school club or organization will be allowed, he said. However, the head cannot be covered by the hood during the school day. “We will give another year to try it. …We have listened to the community and heard their concerns.”
In other action from the June 29, the school board held an executive session to discuss “good name and character.” No action was taken after completion of the session.
• Board member Sharon Buford abstained in the vote to hire William Buford as a history teacher at Thomasville Middle School due to the family connection.
• The next school board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on July 13 in the THS library.
