Following is a statement from Vickie Morris, Thomasville City School Superintendent:
At arrival this morning at Thomasville Elementary School, a young student brought a loaded gun in their backpack. Minutes after they arrived, the teacher confiscated the backpack and found the weapon. The teacher immediately contacted the School Resource Officer (SRO) Charles Burge and campus administrators.
The backpack was taken and secured in the school office. School officials, including TES administrators, the SRO, the school system Safety Coordinator Adam Elliott and Superintendent Vickie Morris implemented the School Safety Plan, and conducted a threat assessment.
The student has been removed, and the matter has been turned over to the Thomasville Police Department.
Because of the quick action of the teachers and administrators, there was never any danger to other students or staff members.
Classes continue at TES without interruption.
