H1N1 (swine) Influenza
As you know, the cases of H1N1 influenza are increasing in our area. We have reports of several cases of influenza locally. Local physicians and emergency rooms are no longer testing for H1N1 influenza due to the prevalence of the virus. More than 99% of all positive influenza samples tested by the Bureau of Clinical Laboratories during the past four weeks were positive for the H1N1 strain.
We are continuing to monitor the progression and are staying informed. However, we need your help.
Symptoms of swine flu in humans are similar to those of seasonal influenza and include fever, muscle aches, sore throat, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea, have also been reported. If your student shows any of these symptoms, please do not send them to school.
There are actions we are practicing and encouraging every day to stay healthy: · Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. · Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. · Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way. · If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
It is important that ill persons not go to school until they have been free from fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Please contact your school nurse or local physician if you have any questions. You can find more information at www.cdc.gov/H1N1flu as well as the Alabama Department of Public Health at www.adph.org. |
